Paanch (Hindi: पाँच) is an unreleased Indian film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap and starring Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Vijay Maurya, Joy Fernandes and Tejaswini Kolhapure. The film is "loosely" based on the 1976-77 Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders in Pune.[1] The film never got a theatrical or home-video release. It has been refused a clearance certificate by the censor board, twice. Both the refusals to release this film were made on six grounds - the film glorifies violence; it shows the modus operandi of a crime (killing of a police officer); it shows excessive use of drugs; it has double meaning dialogues (with sexual undertones); it has no positive characters; it does not carry a social message. All those who have seen the film either in private-screenings or through leaked copy from torrent sites, have praised its realistic approach. And many famous directors like Ram Gopal Varma, Govind Nihalani, Sudhir Mishra, Kundan Shah, Ketan Mehta, Aziz Mirza and Farhan Akhtar have liked the film. Only Ashutosh Gowariker said that he saw why the censor board was refusing it a certificate. It is really disturbing, he said.

Story

The story starts with present generation and soon goes back to history. Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar (Prithviraj) sets on mission to kill Vasco da Gama, the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India. Plot
In 1279 A.D., the downfall of the Chola dynasty seems imminent as the Pandyas drive the Chola people out of their kingdom in southern India. To escape them and save the life of his successor the Chola
emperor sends his son along with the Chola people to a secret territory. The refugees take along an idol sacred to the Pandyas, angering them. To capture the escaped Cholas and the stolen idol, the
Pandyas extend their invasion to unexplored territories but cannot find them.
Centuries later, in 2009, Indian archaeologists continue searching for the existence of the lost Chola group based on clues left by the ancient Pandyan warriors. All archaeologists who attempted to search for
the secret land have disappeared. Archaeologist Chandramouli is the most recent person to have gone missing.
The Indian government organizes a search expedition led by officer Anitha to find Chandramouli and the Chola empire; she is assisted by the Indian army led by Ravisekharan. They recruit archaeologist
Lavanya, the estranged daughter of Chandramouli, because her insight is essential for the success of the expedition. She hands over crucial documents on the Chola dynasty, prepared by her father, with
instructions on the route to reach the destination.
Along with the army, Anitha employs a group of porters headed by Muthu, to transport the baggage during the journey. The crew embark on their voyage leading them to an island, Min-gua, near Vietnam. They
face seven traps set by the Cholas: sea creatures, cannibals, warriors, snakes, hunger, quicksand and a village. Many porters and army men are killed by these traps.
Muthu, Anitha and Lavanya get separated from the others. They reach the ruins of a village where they are subjected to black magic and nearly go mad before reaching the secret hideout of the Chola. The
three find an ethnic isolated primitive Tamil group, ruled by a Chola king. The king and his people are in hiding, awaiting the arrival of the fabled messenger who will bring glory and prosperity back to their land
and lead them back to Thanjavur, their motherland. The king and the priest consult the gods for omens and order Muthu, Anitha and Lavanya to be burnt alive as sacrifices.
Anitha tells the king that she is the messenger sent from the homeland. Muthu and Lavanya are enslaved while Anitha is given a chance to prove herself. She tries to seduce and convince the Chola king to
march towards the homeland in two days so he can be crowned properly as a king. He suspects her bona fides since none of her actions match those described by the king's ancestors. The ancestors wrote
that the messenger will be preceded by hail and following his ill-treatment will eventually help the tribe.
Meanwhile, Anitha drugs the priest and poisons the water sources. She catches a glimpse of the Pandyas' sacred idol and leaves, finally exposing her identity as a descendant of the Pandya Dynasty. For
generations, her race has been trying to find the whereabouts of the Chola prince and his people. The central minister, who sponsors the expedition, is also shown to be a Pandyan. The Chola king is
shattered for having believed in Anitha. Anitha and Ravishekaran gather an army and assault the hidden kingdom. The king discovers that Muthu is the true messenger who would save the Cholas from the
clutches of Anitha and the army.
The Cholas fight bravely, but eventually lose and are taken prisoners. Their women are molested and raped by the army. The king is killed and the men drown in the seas. Muthu is able to escape and save the
Chola prince. The seed of the Chola dynasty is brought back to India by the messenger as prophesied.

Plot
The film is about an IPS officer Hari (Kalyanram) who is busy investigating the murders of a news reporter (Prabhakar) and then a well known doctor (Rajeev Kanakala) and then discovers that these are the murders done by his conjugal twin Ram (Kalyanram).
The story goes that Ram has a problem with his brain and is unable to control his hyper emotions about few things which makes him a beast at times. He would not even hesitate to kill and does not like anyone being praised or belittling him. In this process, he builds a grudge against his own brother who is good at everything and tries to kill him right during their childhood. Their mother (Seetha) is unable to tolerate all this and takes it upon herself to change Ram, so she takes him away from Hari to avoid further hatred but then not much change happens in the nature of Ram even after they grow up. Meanwhile, Hari is often chased by Anjali (Priyamani) who poses as a bank employee but in truth she is actually a CBI officer who comes to arrest Hari since she suspects his hand in the killings of a news reporter (Prabhakar) and a well known doctor (Rajeev Kanakala). Apparently, the doctor happens to be the younger brother of the health minister Siva Reddy (Kota Srinivasa Rao) and from then on the minister is closely on the heels of the killer. Anjali finally manages to arrest Hari successfully through a plan of hers and soon she realizes her folly when she chances upon his mother and understands the entire story of Hari and Ram.
Why does Ram commit the two murders? Does he change his attitude towards his brother? Can Ram get out of the case smoothly? All this forms the rest of the story.

Sivaji(Prabhas), his brother Ashok (Shafi) and mother (Bhanupriya) are Telugus settled in Srilanka. Due to political problems, they get evicted and return to India 12 years back. During the eviction process Sivaji is separated from his brother and mother. Sivaji reaches Vizag. There is a leader called Baji Rao (Narendra Jha) who exploits these refugees by making them bonded-labor for life. Sivaji turns out to be the leader among the refugees and puts an end to Baji Rao. There by he makes sure that there is no exploitation of refugees. Sivaji is also in constant search of his mother and his obnoxiously-jealous brother. Sai (Sairam Shankar) completes his education and wastes his time. He refuses to marry as her mother Ramanamma (Kovai Sarala) wanted to put some responsibility on him. SaiÂ's father Rao is a clerk with a real estate firm run by Surya Prakash (Sayaji Shinde). Once, Surya PrakashÂ's daughter Aiswarya (Bindu Madhav) breaks the leg of Sai mistaking him to be someone who tried to tease her. This makes him lose his heart to Aiswarya. The story starts off in Khairatabad area where Gyaneshwar (Srihari) is a vagagabond. The area is under his control and he's the only one authorized to do settlements upon petty issues. In comes Bottu Seenu (Nagarjuna) who is a tough competitor for the established don. On a beautiful interlude in a rainy day, Bottu Seenu comes across Sravani (Trisha). He falls in love with her and makes utmost efforts to woo her heart. But, bad luck for Bottu as Sravani was already in love with a software engineer Sharath (the second Nag). Bottu gets disappointed yet a twist of fate awaits there.

Life goes on smoothly until Babu chances upon Baby (Aksha) in an unexpected situation and in no time both of them fall in love with each other. Just when love seems to be blooming tragedy strikes in the form of the aspiring film director getting hospitalized. Bunny (Allu Arjun) is a happy-go-lucky guy. He delivers pizza for a living. He comes across Madhumathi (Genelia), a medico, who is pursuing studies against heavy odds as her father is an obscurantist of sorts who thinks a woman's rightful place is in the kitchen.
